Drawn with the page turned horizontally, this view of the Abbey is similar to that on folio 4 recto (D01250: Turner Bequest XXXVIII 1) but from a spot considerably closer. The building to the left is Abbey House, built in the first half of the sixteenth century by William Stumpe.
This is one of a sequence of twelve drawings of Malmesbury in this book; see under folio 2 recto (D01252; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 3).
Technical notes:
The paper is discoloured from exposure while on display, except where the edges and a broad strip on the right were protected by a mount.

Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘Sir Richard Colt Hoare Bart’; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram above ‘XXXVIII – 86’. For the Colt Hoare commission for drawings of Malmesbury, see the note to folio 3 recto (D01253; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 4).
