This drawing is based on a rough pencil sketch of Franchimont taken in the Spa, Dinant and Namur sketchbook of 1839 (Tate D28103; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVII 32a). It is rendered in muted grey-blue, warm ochre and translucent burgundy. Turner employs rust-toned sepia ink and pen to describe the lower reaches of the hillside and a road leading away from the viewer. The artist’s handling is nimble and summary. A few figures people the foreground and a carriage can be seen speeding down the road: perhaps some foreground incident to enrich the preliminary pencil sketch.
Technical notes:
There is some foxing present where the paper has discoloured after having been framed and displayed.
Verso:
Stamped in black with Turner Bequest monogram and ‘CCXXII G’ at bottom left; inscribed in pencil ‘CCXXII G’ at bottom right.
