This slight sketch depicts the ruins of the Burg Treis, a medieval castle located upstream from Treis overlooking the confluence of the Flaum and the Dunn streams.1
Turner drew Burg Treis in 1824 in the Rivers Meuse and Moselle sketchbook (Tate D19799–D19801; Turner Bequest CCXVI 124a–125a) and in the First Mossel and Oxford sketchbook in 1839 (Tate D28315; Turner Bequest CCLXXXIX 13).
