J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

This view and that on folio 6 recto (Tate D28547; Turner Bequest CCXCI 6) are similar in terms of vantage point to Cochem from the North, a gouache and watercolour drawing executed on blue paper (Tate D20238; Turner Bequest CCXXI E). The Reichsburg Castle is seen to the left of St Martin’s Church, whilst the Capuchin monastery is situated to its right. The opening to the Endert river valley is also visible at right, where there is a break in the hills.

Turner has inscribed ‘Cun’ at the foot of the sketch; he is presumably referring to the village of Cond which lies on the opposite bank of the Moselle to Cochem.
