Rendered with similar handling to the view of Cochem on the folio opposite (Tate D28543; Turner Bequest CCXCI 3a), in this sketch Turner shows the Capuchin monastery at top left and the steeple of Saint Martin’s Church at centre. Turner took this sketch ‘at a corner of the market square’ in Cochem, ‘looking ... towards the baroque town hall and the statue of St Martin and the beggar’.1
