J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

Running across the upper, central and lower registers Turner has drawn sketches of a number of villages on the Moselle, located south of Mesenich and Cochem. Rendered with light handling in sharp pencil line, Turner depicts the profiles of Senhals, Senheim and Nehren at the top, inscribing each with their town’s name. Below is a sketch of the Lehmener Tower, or Lehmener Turm, on the banks of the Moselle at Nehren. Constructed in the thirteenth century in the Romanesque architectural style, this residential tower belonged to the estate of the lords of Lehmen. The final sketch shows Ediger’s valley with a towered building at right.
