With the same fine and agile handling seen in the previous drawing of Cochem (Tate D28359; Turner Bequest CCXC 5), Turner represents the town from the opposite riverbank at Cond. The sketch shows the jagged ruins of the Reichsburg crowning the conical mount and a parade of narrow-fronted gabled houses lining the river. Two figures survey the scene to the left of the foreground. This sketch is continued on the folio opposite to make one panoramic view (Tate D28361; Turner Bequest CCXC 6). Both formed the basis of a gouache and watercolour drawing of c.1839 (Tate D24725; Turner Bequest CCLIX 160).
For further depictions of Cochem in this sketchbook see Tate D28362–D28363; Turner Bequest CCXC 6a–7. See also the First Mossel and Oxford sketchbook belonging to the 1839 tour (Tate D28295, D28296, D28318, D28319; Turner Bequest CCLXXXIX 3, 3a, 14a, 15). For earlier views see the Rivers Meuse and Moselle sketchbook of 1824 (Tate D19792–D19796; Turner Bequest CCXVI 121–123).
