On the front cover of this sketchbook is affixed a white paper label inscribed in pen and black ink by Turner with a list of the five sketchbooks used during the 1839 Meuse-Mosel tour. The inscriptions read:
‘No 1 Brussels up to Givet’ | ‘2. Givet Mis Ver Metz Lux Treves’ | ‘3. First Mossel and Oxford’ | ‘4. Mayence Wis Coblenz and 2 Mosel to Cochem’ | ‘5. Cockum to Cob. Home’
The list describes the stages of the tour and designates the order in which Turner intended the sketchbooks to be viewed. The number ‘4’, which is inscribed in black ink at the top left of the front cover, indicates that this sketchbook is the fourth in the group.
