This series of sketches shows the towns of Treis and Karden, which lie on opposite sides of the Moselle to each other, as well as the neighbouring settlement of Pommern. Moving from the gutter of the sketchbook to the uppermost register, Turner has depicted: Karden and Treis with a detail of Karden’s twin-towered Church of Saint Castor; Treis, looking downstream on the Moselle with Saint Catherine’s Parish Church (Pfarrkirche St Katharina); The Burg Treis, a medieval castle formed of a conical quarry-stone keep and gatehouse, seen overlooking the Moselle from atop a mount; the town of Pommern with the Gothic Parish Church of Saint Stephen; and finally a diminutive distant view of Treis.
