Here Turner has produced two sketches of Givet in tentative and abbreviated line. The larger of the two encompasses a variety of sights: the fortress of Charlemont atop the precipitous valley cliff; the Tour Victoire on the banks of the Meuse and Church of Saint-Hilaire, the stone bridge and finally the spire of Notre-Dame Church. Above the principal drawing is a further sketch with quick notations of trees and a tower belonging to the complex of Charlemont. For other drawings of Givet see Tate D28170–D28181, D28183–D28185, D28187; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVIII 2a–8, 9–10, 11.
