This drawing, made with the page turned horizontally, is evidence that Turner equipped himself with detailed knowledge of the Prebend’s Bridge, though he did not execute his watercolour view of Durham from the bridge, for the Picturesque Views in England and Wales until the mid-1830s (National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh);1 it was engraved in 1837 (Tate impression: T05101). Then, he incorporated only a fragment of the masonry of the parapet into his composition, establishing a viewpoint but hardly more.
