Joseph Mallord William Turner Inscription by Turner: ?Accounts c.1834-6

Folio 6 Recto:
Inscription by Turner: ?Accounts c.1834–6
D27734
Turner Bequest CCLXXXI 6
Ink on white wove paper, 79 x 101 mm
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘6’ top left, upside down
Stamped in black ‘CCLXXXI – 6’ top left, upside down

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Across the top of the page, Turner has inscribed the following in ink, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation:
Nov 2   –   3   1 – 10
Oct 11  –   26   5
There is an ink mark above the ‘2’ which might be an ‘a’ or ‘n’, or just a pen test. The significance of the figures is unclear, but they are perhaps typically ad hoc notes of money owed to or by the artist, in pounds, shillings and pence. This is one of a few miscellaneous pages of notes scattered through the sketchbook, as set out in the Introduction.
