To the south-east the entrance front of Blenheim Palace is seen, above its lake in the foreground with the Grand Bridge on the left. The house is continued on folio 6 recto opposite (D21984), with the lake curving away to the south among trees. A similar view, from nearer the bridge, is on folios 4 verso–5 recto (D21981, D21982); others are discussed under D21981.
Eric Shanes has related the present sketch to a ‘colour beginning’ (Tate D25489; Turner Bequest CCLXIII 366) for Turner’s watercolour of Blenheim,1 discussed under folio 12 verso (D21995). For other views of Blenheim, see under folio 2 verso (D21978).
