The view is to the south-east, towards the entrance front of Blenheim Palace, set above the lake in the foreground with the Grand Bridge on the left. The view continues on folio 5 recto opposite (D21982), where the lake curves away to the south between the woods beyond the house. There is a similar view, from a little westwards along the bank, on folios 5 verso–6 recto (D21983, D21984), and a slighter one from east of the bridge on folios 6 verso–7 recto (D21985, D21986).
Eric Shanes has related the present sketch to a ‘colour beginning’ (Tate D25489; Turner Bequest CCLXIII 366) for Turner’s watercolour of Blenheim,1 discussed under folio 12 verso (D21995). For other views of Blenheim, see under folio 2 verso (D21978).
