The sketches on this page are inverted relative to the foliation. The jagged strikes of the pencil at the very top of the page constitute the contours of a cliff which Turner has extended across the page onto folio 3 recto opposite (D35338). Beneath these marks is the outline of a second cliff; here Turner depicts the attenuating section of this cliff which broadens as it extends onto the opposite page to render the headland. Below is a seemingly isolated sketch across the middle of the page. Rapidly rendered, this sketch may depict another cliff structure or beach. It is markedly undeveloped in relation to the other sketches.
Technical notes:
Incidental traces of chalk appear on the surface of the paper, which seem to be unrelated to the drawing.
