‘The Sublime Now’, 19–20 October 2007, Clore Auditorium, Tate Britain
This conference marked the 250th anniversary of Edmund Burke’s A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (1757), a short book which had a major impact. The conference celebrated Burke’s influence by investigating contemporary aesthetics, politics and ecology and asked why the sublime now and what is its legacy today.
The conference investigated the ways in which the sublime may have acquired an added urgency at the start of the twenty-first century, and considered the extent to which the concept a useful or dangerous tool for understanding contemporary history and culture.
