Turner Bequest XXVII O
Pencil and watercolour on white wove paper prepared with a blue-grey wash, 254 x 483 mm
Stamped in black ‘XXVII O’ bottom right
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This is a somewhat tentative essay, in which Turner can be seen washing large areas of the sheet with pale colour before working on the details of his subject. The palette is similar to that used in some studies in the South Wales sketchbook (Tate D00632, D00633, D00638; Turner Bequest XXVI 74, 75, 79). There are paint trials on three sides of the subject.
Technical notes:
This somewhat irregular sheet was evidently torn from one twice the size, on which a large copper plate had been impressed; this does not seem to have borne an image. The lower corners have been roughly torn away.
Verso:
Blank; stained and dirty; not stamped.
