Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
A Road between Rocks and Trees with Distant Landscape ?1793
D40239
Turner Bequest XIII H b
Pencil on white laid paper, 130 x 86 mm; 130 x 191 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘The distance lost with the sky a | lovely tint of Blue <on> Lake and Indian | more as it approches [sic]’ towards bottom
Inscribed in pencil ‘D.00153’ top left, descending vertically (see main catalogue entry)
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This drawing was presumably made from the same point, or thereabouts, as the view of the Herefordshire Beacon on the other half of this part of the sheet (D00153), from which there is a slight continuation; that is to say, near the road from Hereford to Tewkesbury, between Eastnor and Hollybush. With the rising ground on the left, we are probably looking east towards the Cotwolds in the far distance.
Technical notes:
Owing to the complexities of accessioning, the present drawing (D40239) has been incorrectly inscribed ‘D.00153’, and vice versa. For an overview of the various works on this folded sheet, see under D00153 (Turner Bequest XIII H a). The other side of the present section is D40268.
