Joseph Mallord William Turner Part of the Ruins of Tintern Abbey 1792

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Part of the Ruins of Tintern Abbey 1792
D00132
Turner Bequest XII C
Pencil on white wove paper, 269 x 211 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘Part of the East Window Tintern Abby [sic]’ bottom left
Stamped in black ‘XII C’ bottom right
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The subject does not include the large east window of Tintern, and it seems that Turner intended his inscription for another sheet (Tate D00134; Turner Bequest XII E). This drawing appears to show the ruins of the north aisle seen from outside, with the arches of the crossing glimpsed beyond.
Technical notes:
The brown discolouration of the sheet indicates that it has at some point been attached to a wooden backboard; presumably for display in the British Museum loan scheme.
Verso:
Blank; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram; inscribed in a later hand ‘13’.
