Another view of the ruins of Netley Abbey is on folio 22 recto (D00429), under which a possible commission to make views of Netley, perhaps for Sir Harry Crichton, is discussed. No finished watercolour of the subject is known, however.
The ruins formed a subject popular with the Picturesque viewmakers. They attracted sightseers while Turner was there, as shown in this drawing.
