The ruins of the Cistercian Abbey date from the thirteenth century and later. Selby Whittingham has noted that Turner’s watercolour of Chale Farm, based on a drawing in this book (see folio 29 recto; D00436; Turner Bequest XXIV 28) belonged to Sir Harry Crichton of Netley Abbey,1 and it is possible that the studies of the Abbey ruins on this and folio 23 recto (D00430) were made with a commission from the local family in mind. No watercolour views of Netley by Turner are recorded, however.
