The view shows the road down to the estuary of the River Neath and Swansea Bay, at Port Talbot (Aberavon). Margam is noted in the itinerary written into the South Wales sketchbook as being of interest for ‘An Abbey & Chapter House the Church & Monuments – An Old Saxon Cross in the Village’ (Tate D40554; Turner Bequest XXVI [recto of first flyleaf]).
