The subject is taken from a drawing by John Robert Cozens (1752–1797) in Beckford Sketchbook I, p.19, titled ‘The Euganean Hills from the Walls of Padua’ and dated ‘June 18 [1782]’ (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, D1975.4.19).1
