The subject matter and style of these studies link the sheet with the Marford Mill sketchbook (for example Tate D00273; Turner Bequest XX 11); compare the smear of oil paint with the verso of Tate D00298 (Turner Bequest XX 28) in the same sketchbook. An apparently related sheet is Tate D00383 (Turner Bequest XXIII I); both may be connected to the fairground scene in the watercolour of Woolverhampton, Staffordshire that Turner exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1796 (Wolverhampton Art Gallery and Museum).1
