Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 17 Verso:
A Partially Draped Figure c.1789
D00032
Turner Bequest II 17a
Pencil on white laid paper, 249 x 160 mm
Stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram centre right

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
A slight sketch. Other rapid figure studies in the book, on folios 5 recto and 20 verso (D00015, D00036), may show the same figure. It is perhaps a heroic warrior, but, such is the paucity of specific detail, might equally be St John the Baptist, or an ascending soul in a Last Judgement (see Tate D00196; Turner Bequest XVIII A).
