This is apparently based on the drawing in the Isle of Wight sketchbook (Tate D00432; Turner Bequest XXIV 25). See also Tate D08274 (Turner Bequest CXXI R).
The work is noted by Finberg as ‘Formerly No.49, 4th Loan Collection’,1 without indicating when it was withdrawn. As it is not in the catalogue for the 1906–8 showing in Manchester,2 only the 1891–5 Sheffield showing (commemorated in William White’s 1896 book) is given here as definite, with other venues before 1906 listed speculatively.
