Drawn with the sketchbook inverted, Turner made this sketch of Castle Campbell from the hillside to the north-west. Looking towards the shaded northern façade of the castle, Turner has included the pathway leading up to the castle gate. Below the castle to the right is the Burn of Sorrow, which flows into Dollar Burn just behind the castle hill. At the top right of the page is a separate sketch made from inside the castle. This shows the eastern end of the Hall Range.
For references to further sketches of Castle Campbell, see folio 6 verso (D26688; CCLXXII 12).
