The main sketch on this page is of Bothwell Castle, showing the south-east tower as seen from the east. At the centre of the sketch is a row of vertical lines representing ‘trees’ according to Turner’s inscription. He drew similar transparent trees in a sketch of the castle on folio 30 verso (D26318). Turner visited the castle during a short tour of Lanarkshire on 19 September 1834 and made numerous sketches in this sketchbook; see folio 26 (D26309) for more information and references.
At the left-hand-side of the page, drawn with the sketchbook turned to the right is a quick sketch of rocks and perhaps a tower on the coast. The sketch is inscribed by Turner with a scrawl that looks like ‘Lr sand’.
