Turner first used this page for a sketch of Castle Campbell at Dollar in Clackmannanshire drawn across the bottom half of the sheet. This is a view from the hill to the north-west of the castle with Dollar Glen in the foreground. Turner made a comparable view in the Loch Ard sketchbook: Tate D26719 (Turner Bequest CCLXXII 28a). For references to further sketches of Castle Campbell in the present sketchbook see folio 70 verso (D26393). For more information about Turner’s visit to the castle see Tate D26688 (Turner Bequest CCLXXII 12).
Later Turner utilised the space at the top of the page for the first in a series of sketches of Edinburgh with the memorial to Dugald Stewart (1753–1828) on Calton Hill: folios 76 verso–79 verso (D26405–D26411). The monument appears here at the centre of the sketch with the Edinburgh skyline drawn sketchily behind it. Edinburgh Castle may be indicated at the right. Several horizontal lines above the monument may represent small scudding clouds low in the sky. For more information about this series of sketches see folio 79 verso.
