This sketch of a distant tower on a hill with a river and bridge in the foreground cannot be identified with any certainty. However a plausible suggestion is Castle Campbell at Dollar in Clackmannanshire. The castle stands on a foothill of the Ochil Hills with Dollar Burn running past it towards the town. Turner made several sketches of the castle from the foot of the approach road at Dollar with the burn in the foreground that are comparable to some extent with the present sketch: see Tate D26688 (Turner Bequest CCLXXII 12).
For references to further sketches of the castle in the present book see folio 70 verso (D26393).
