With the sketchbook turned to the right are three sketches of Bothwell Bridge which spans the River Clyde at the town of Bothwell in Lanarkshire. The three sketches show the same view but vary the composition, suggesting that Turner was interested in developing this composition, though he never painted Bothwell Bridge. There are further views from the north side of the Clyde around the site of the Battle of Bothwell Bridge, on folios 31 verso and 32 (D26320, D26321). For more information about Turner’s visit to Bothwell, see folio 31 (D26319).
