With the sketchbook in the landscape format (with the gutter to the left) are two studies or diagrams of machinery. At the left is some kind of wheeled vehicle (also depicted on the inside front cover; D41047) and at the right is a scaffold structure with two uprights, two crossbars and a lattice of diagonal struts (also shown on D41047). At the top of the structure are two wheels connected by an axel. This must be some kind of winch. There are no further clues to determine whether this is something Turner saw on his travels, or a design of his own.
At the bottom left of the page is a sketched map or route with place names inscribed on it. Turner’s notes, however, have not been deciphered and it is uncertain what this is a map of. It is likely to represent part of Turner’s 1834 tour of Scotland; see Tour of Scotland for Scott’s Prose Works 1834 Tour Introduction for the full itinerary.
