This is one of several rather similar sketches of Neidpath Castle near Peebles, as seen from the north with the River Tweed at the right; see also folios 7 verso and 8 verso (D26108, D26110). Turner has paid little attention to the architecture of the castle, just laying in the main compositional structure of the scene. He has, however, endeavoured to capture the appearance of the river as the water flows around a bend and is divided in two by a sand bank.
For further information on Turner’s Neidpath sketches see folio 5 (D26103).
