This is the eastern façade of Neidpath Castle near Peebles, as seen from just outside the gateway with the remains of the bakehouse at the left. A twist of the River Tweed can be seen at the right with the high banks of the river beyond. A drawing by Alexander Archer of the Front View of Nidpath Castle, 1834 (Royal Commission on the Ancient Monuments of Scotland), made just over a month before Turner’s drawing, provides a useful comparison to this sketch.

There are light brown stains across the right of this page.
