Despite appearing on the same page as a sketch inscribed ‘Loch Oich’, the sketch at the top of this page is not Invergarry but Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness. The castle is seen from Loch Ness to the south-east and was made as Turner steamed passed on his journey north to Inverness. The viewpoint is similar to the sketch on folio 21 verso (D27003), meaning that having made that sketch he turned back to the present page to fill the empty space. For more information on Turner’s sketches of the castle see folio 19 (D26998).
It is hard to identify exactly the view of the ‘Loch Oich’ sketch at the bottom of the page. It may show a view west up the River Garry with Ben Tee to the left. Most of Turner’s sketches of the Loch depict Invergarry Castle (see folio 12; D26984).
