This sketch has been identified as showing the view south down Loch Linnhe from Corpach, Fort William. At the left, on the east side of the loch, are the foothills of Ben Nevis beneath which is the town of Fort William. Along with a boat tied up at the quay in the foreground, it has been suggested that there is a canal lock, making this a view from the entrance to the Caledonian Canal. Turner boarded a steamer from here which brought him up the canal to Inverness. Also in the foreground is a figure standing with its back to us admiring the same view.
For further sketches made around Fort William see folio 8 verso (D26760).
