J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

The larger of the two sketches on this page is inscribed ‘Tobermory’ by Turner, and must therefore show the southern end of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull from the Main Street. A view from the hill to the west on folio 2 verso (D26751) also shows the pier with two masts of an unseen boat. In the foreground Turner has included a group of four or so figures walking along the beach. At the right a series of diagonal marks may indicate the hill to the west of the bay with trees at the top, although it is not clear whether this is intended to be part of the same sketch.

Turner drew another view of a harbour, this time with two boats at the fore-edge of the page with the sketchbook inverted. This is presumably Tobermory again, although the towered building at the left has not been identified. For references to further sketches of Tobermory see folio 1 verso (D26749).
