Exhibitions

‘We have broken away from convention, and recognise no laws of art. Each man is a law unto himself. You might describe us as art anarchists.’ Recorded in a review of the first Camden Town Group exhibition, these words by the group’s secretary James Bolivar Manson drew attention to the group’s acceptance of stylistic diversity among its members.
The short-lived Camden Town Group held only three exhibitions – in June 1911, December 1911 and December 1912. Each was staged at the Carfax Gallery in the fashionable area of St James’s in London. See the shows’ catalogues and explore the critics’ varied responses to the exhibitions.
