In this study Walter Sickert depicts a performer on stage; the placement of the figure’s hands suggests that he is playing a wind instrument, but it has not been drawn. Diagonal lines from the top left of the study show the spotlight falling on the performer. Sickert has used crayon to outline the figure’s hat and jacket (see also TGA 8120/3/64). Previously this work has been catalogued as a drawing of Vernet’s, a cabaret café on the Quai Henri IV in Dieppe.
