The Camden Town Group in Context

This pencil drawing on tracing paper depicts a three-quarter-length profile of a standing woman. Nicola Moorby has suggested that it may be a study for the painting Girl with Palmettes; ?Portrait of the Artist’s Wife c.1914 (Tate T00893). Colour notes inscribed on the sketch describe the hat as ‘Purple’ and ‘Dark inky blue’ with a wide ribbon band of ‘Bright orange | & crimson shadows’, which corresponds with the details of the painting. Further inscriptions read: ‘Black with white spots’, ‘Blue grey’, ‘Red grey’, ‘Orange & red in shadow’, ‘Purple grey’, ‘Blue grey’, ‘greenish | & | Blue’, ‘Red grey’, ‘greenish’ and ‘Orange grey’. The painting may depict the artist’s wife, Zina Drummond, née Ogilvie (1887–1931). For further information, see Tate T00893.
