This study is one of many in Tate Archive that show Dieppe and the local area. Written on a sign at the top of the sketch are the words ‘CAFE BAR’. The view could be from the corner of the Quai Henri IV looking towards the Café Suisse on the Arc Poissonnerie opposite, as what appears to be the same sign is depicted in the background of Female Figures in the Café Suisse, Dieppe c.1914 (TGA 8120/3/16) and Café Suisse, Dieppe 1914 (TGA 8120/3/29).
Sickert often used an account book for sketching, which other Camden Town Group artists did also, such as Malcolm Drummond (see, for example, Study for ‘The Sculptor’s Studio’ c.1910, TGA 8915). The page has subsequently been torn out of the book. The study has been dated as c.1914 by Wendy Baron.
