This grouping of Venetian colour studies and drawings in chalk and pencil comprises aspects of the public spaces of the Piazza San Marco (St Mark’s Square) and the Piazzetta, linking the east end of the main square southwards to the Molo waterfront facing the Bacino. The views feature some of the grandest and best-known buildings in Venice, in particular the Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace), the adjacent Basilica of St Mark, and its soaring campanile. Shadowy, crepuscular views inside the church are included in the parallel subsection of interiors and figure scenes.
The works are on a variety of grey, buff, brown and white papers, as discussed in their individual technical notes; see also the Introduction to the tour.
