Joseph Mallord William Turner Winchester from the South with the Cathedral and College 1795

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 14 Recto:
Winchester from the South with the Cathedral and College 1795
D00420
Turner Bequest XXIV 14a
Pencil on white wove paper, 122 x 204 mm
Stamped in black ‘XXIV 14 A’ bottom right

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Turner made a detailed drawing of the West front of the Cathedral on folio 11 recto (D00417), but no other record of the building other than this note, which seems to have been intended as a composition study, like that of Salisbury on the lower half of the leaf (D00421; Turner Bequest XXIV 14b). It is, indeed, just such a general view of the town as he made in several instances for Walker’s Copper-Plate Magazine; see the introduction to the Matlock sketchbook (Tate; Turner Bequest XIX). The tower to the right of the view is that of Winchester College Chapel.
Technical notes:
This is the upper half of a leaf which has been torn in two and since made up by a strip of paper, reconstituting the page to its full dimensions of 264 x 204 mm; the lower half (i.e. also part of folio 14 recto) is D00421 (Turner Bequest XXIV 14b).
Verso:
Blank; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
