Drawn with the page turned horizontally, the subject is continued a little way onto folio 7 verso opposite (D02002). Turner made a series of drawings of the fourteenth-century Cistercian Abbey at Whalley in the contemporary Lancashire and North Wales sketchbook (Tate D01967, D01969, D01983, D01984; Turner Bequest XLV 34a, 35a, 43, 44), with a view to producing watercolours for engraving as illustrations to Dr Thomas Dunham Whitaker’s History of the Parish of Whalley.
