The top two drawings on this page, inverted in relation to the sketchbook as foliated, record views of the village of Villequier on the Normandy banks of the Seine. For Turner’s watercolour on this subject from around this time, see Tate D24669 (Turner Bequest CCLIX 104). Villequier also features on folio 11 Verso opposite (D23542; Turner Bequest CCLII 11a). The semi-decipherable inscription towards the bottom right-hand corner of this page suggests that the small riverside scene directly below can be located in the vicinity of Sainte-Marie-des-Champs.
