These rough and swiftly wrought sketches depict the ruined fortress of Montroyal at Traben-Trarbach. All of the sketches were drawn with the sketchbook turned upside down. Turner has inscribed the page ‘Montroy’. There are other, similarly rendered sketches of the same monument on folio 16 verso (Tate D28382; Turner Bequest CCXC 16 a).
