Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 90 Verso:

D02595
Turner Bequest LIII 90a
Pencil on white wove paper, 162 x 112 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the subject is continued on folio 91 recto opposite (D02596). This is presumably a view on the Firth of Forth near Musselburgh; see folios 40 verso–41 recto; D02530–D02531).
Technical notes:
Although the double–page view appears effectively continuous, a leaf has been cut out leaving a stub between the two halves, and Turner appears to have deliberately avoided drawing all the way to the gutter; see the technical notes in the sketchbook’s Introduction for the various leaves extracted from it.
