This view of Vienna was taken from a window in the Upper Belvedere, formerly a Habsburg palace which then housed the imperial art collection (see Tate D41262, D31416; Turner Bequest CCCXI 1). A parterre is roughly sketched out in the foreground, leading down to the Lower Belvedere at centre. The spire of St Stephan’s Cathedral can be seen at left, with the domed Salesianerinnenkirche at right.
