With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner appears to have rendered a distant view of Verona, possibly from the heights around Castel San Pietro looking towards the Basilica di San Zeno. The sketch is inscribed ‘Saluta | Z[...]’.
With the sketchbook turned in accordance with the foliation Turner has also produced rough sketches of Padua and its environs (inscribed at centre). The triumphal arch depicted at centre may be part of the gardens of the Palazzo Mantua Benavides.1 Below is a view of the city with the domes of the Cathedral visible at left and a tower, possibly the Torre del Bo, at centre.
