This page contains three landscape sketches which despite being currently unidentified, almost certainly relate to Turner’s return journey from Italy through France in January 1820. The draughtsmanship is very rough suggesting that they were executed swiftly whilst on the move. The central study depicts a castle, whilst the upper drawing represents part of a headland within a bay. The composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 103 (D16882; Turner Bequest CXCIII 102).
